Living code

Code is not a commodity.

It is deeply connected to the living world that produces it.

The implicit lesson if the Conway manoeuvre - that software grows to match the communication pattern of the organisation in which its created - is that code is a reflection of the humanity that created it.

That was true when only humans wrote code.

But that is no longer the reality we inhabit.

I’m not here to debate whether AI systems are, or can be, alive.

But if it is undeniable that humans are no longer the only authors of code, and that software can now created with limited to no human oversight.

Code has always been a synthesis of the organic and inorganic. I believe AI expands, rather than disrupts, this collaboration.

Software is something to be nurtured and cultivated.

So too is AI.

So too are we..
